Welcome at the European Federation for Living (EFL)

EFL is a unique cooperation association of European organisations which is active in the field of real estate development, financing and control. Furthermore the EFL works in cooperation with research institutes, public bodies and the business community. It has the objective of a mutual realisation of sustainable residential and living areas in Europe and the exchange of knowhow and experiences. In 2007 the EFL was established on the initiative of Rob van der Leij, major CEO of the Van der Leij Groep BV, with Joost Nieuwenhuijzen, former regional director of housing company Rochdale (Amsterdam) .

Brief history EFL

In 2005, the first foundations of the European Federation for Living were laid by establishing the Dutch-German Connection (NDC). NDC was founded as a cooperative between a number of Dutch housing corporations, a developer and a building contractor, with the joint intention of promoting the interchange of knowledge between Dutch and German housing corporations and their related institutions. Its aim was to transfer experience and knowledge and, in doing so, provide added value to their own corporate activities. The basis for this was provided by the MSRE Master thesis of drs. Joost Nieuwenhuijzen MSRE “De Duitse Weg”. (freely translated in English: The German way)

EFL At present / Now

EFL bundles or combines professional knowhow and expertise of housing associations, financial institutes, real estate investors, construction companies and knowledge institutes in Europe. The EFL objective is to realise sustainable living and residential environments, social involvement and a fitting service for residents. This is among others achieved by the exchange of knowhow and the realisation of mutual projects on European level.

EFL has organised its activities in two different companies:

  1. EFL- EESV: A European Cooperation which functions as a foundation, and which supports the immediate interests and activities of its members. The EEIG (European Economic Interest Grouping) is the platform within which the mutual policy is set and in which the exchange of knowhow is realised. The EESV has a Daily Board and a General Assembly of Members.
  2. EFL Expertise BV: The EFL expertise centre. EFL Expertise supports and advises members in relation to developments of projects and European Grant projects. For this purpose an exclusive cooperation with a number of knowledge / expertise institutes has been established. EFL Expertise BV manages the EFL operation.

EFL cooperates with EURHONET. This is an assocation of circa 30 public housing companies from 5 countries.  Both organisations also aim for European Grant projects.
